Back to School, Back to Sport: Why Routines Matter for Kids

Back to School, Back to Sport

The first week of September always feels like a fresh start, doesn’t it? At Roarsome Sport HQ it’s been a big one. My eldest has started school — she’s handled it brilliantly, but like most children, she had a little wobble. And for me, I’m taking a leap too: stepping away from engineering and going all in on Roarsome Sport!

This feels like the right moment. As a family, we’re learning to juggle the school run, holidays and all the new routines that come with term-time life. And while my youngest is starting nursery without her big sister by her side, I’m looking forward to building something flexible, fun, and full of opportunities for children to discover sport.

Why Routines (and Sport) Matter

Our first session back after the summer break was full of energy. The children were so excited to reconnect with friends, and even though it took a bit of time to settle back into routine, the joy of moving together was clear to see.

In every Roarsome Sport class, I make sure there’s at least one game that develops listening skills. Children have to focus on me (and yes, my instructions are often very silly!) and practice following what they hear. I also love giving children the chance to lead the game themselves. It’s a simple way to grow confidence while teaching everyone else about respect and teamwork.

These are exactly the kinds of skills children need for school readiness. Listening, focusing, leading, respecting, working together — all while having fun and being active.

Preparing for School Through Play

If your child is starting school next year, now is a wonderful time to give them a gentle head start. Through fun, inclusive sports activities, they can:

  • Build confidence in themselves
  • Make friends in a relaxed environment
  • Practice listening and following instructions
  • Learn to take turns and show respect for others

At Roarsome Sport, we create space for all of this to happen naturally — through games, laughter, and movement.

If you’d like to see how it works in action, why not join us for a 3-week trial? It’s the perfect way to give your child a taste of sport while building important life skills too.
