This week has been so exciting, I just have to share!

I had the absolute pleasure of being invited into a local SEND school to lead some of their PE lessons. Honestly, I was thrilled (and I’ll admit, a bit nervous too!). I knew I’d be working with younger children with a wide range of needs, so my goal was to keep everything simple and focus on the basics: running, jumping, throwing, catching, hopping—all those fundamental movement skills that are so important for little ones.

I also wanted to make sure every activity could be easily adapted on the spot, depending on how the group was feeling. So, I sat down to plan and, as usual, had a scroll online for some new inspiration. What struck me was how many games start with something like: “Split the group into two teams and one person from each team…” Great in theory—but have you noticed how much waiting around that often means? It’s brilliant for teamwork, but I couldn’t help thinking: kids don’t move enough—especially at school.

We all know schools are under pressure to prioritise core subjects, and PE sometimes gets squeezed in around everything else. But when children do have PE, it’s so important that every minute counts. The same goes for us adults, too! I really notice it on those days when I’ve driven to work, sat in a lunchtime meeting (seriously, who puts a meeting in at lunchtime?!), dashed back for nursery pick-up, then raced through bath and bedtime. By the time I finally sit down, my step count is… 3,000 steps if I’m lucky! It’s a bit of a wake-up call, isn’t it?

It’s no different for our children. They need lots of opportunities to move—and it’s up to us to make it as easy and fun as possible.

So that was my focus this week: maximum movement, minimal waiting around. Small teams, short instructions, and as much activity as possible. I’m happy to say the first session went brilliantly! The children were engaged, their confidence grew as the session went on, and they were an absolute joy to teach. I’m already excited to head back next week.

If you work in a school (or know someone who does) and think Roarsome Sport could support your PE lessons, SEND provision, or after-school clubs, I’d love to hear from you. And if you’re looking for fun, friendly weekend sports sessions for your child, you can check out all the details here.

Thanks so much for reading—have a brilliant week!
