Supporting SEND Families Through Summer — And Beyond

Well, the summer holidays are well and truly here — and like many of you, I’m juggling all the things. Two preschoolers at home, part-time work, running Roarsome Sport, and just the general whirlwind of family life. So if things have been a bit quieter around here lately… that’s why!

But I’m back now, and I’ve got some exciting updates to share.

A Summer Collaboration with ProjectINDI

This week, I’ve been working with a brilliant little charity called ProjectINDI, based in Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent. They run clubs and activities to support vulnerable and disabled adults, children, and their families — including a holiday club for children with SEND.

I’ve been popping in to deliver some Roarsome-style movement sessions, tailoring the activities to suit each child’s needs. It’s been so much fun, and the kids have been amazing — curious, playful, and full of personality.

But here’s the thing…

Why Aren’t These Places Full?

The holiday club is funded through the Aiming High scheme, which means children with SEND can attend for free. They’ve got the staff. They’ve got the space. They’ve got the heart. But they’re not at capacity.

I know that more children were booked in than actually came on the day.

And of course, kids get ill — but for SEND families, there are often so many more hurdles to overcome:

  • Are they regulated enough to leave the house today?
  • Are they feeling too anxious to face a new place?
  • Are we just too exhausted from navigating the week?

These are the kind of things I’m thinking about — and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Let’s Start a Conversation

Do you use your local council’s SEND schemes like Aiming High?
Do they work for you and your child?
Have you found groups or clubs that feel truly accessible — or are they few and far between?

Let’s open up the conversation. I’d love to know what’s working, what’s not, and what you’d love to see more of.

Because these opportunities are out there — but maybe they need to be reshaped, reimagined, or simply made easier to access in the first place.

And if you’re based in or near Stoke-on-Trent, I honestly can’t recommend ProjectINDI enough. Pop over to their space in Sneyd Green and see what they’re up to — they’ve got so much potential to support more families like yours.

Thanks for being here. If this post struck a chord, please do share it with another SEND parent who might be navigating the same questions. And as always — my inbox is open if you want to chat.
