Autumn Adventures: Simple Ways to Keep Kids Active Outdoors

As the leaves turn golden and the mornings feel just a little bit crisper, autumn is one of my favourite times to get outside with children. Nature does half the work for us – the colours, the smells, and of course, the conkers!

Just the other week, my littlest and I went conker picking. She was delighted with the treasure we found. When we got home, I tipped the conkers into the tuff tray, added a few scoops and stacking cups, and she was off – pouring, stacking, tipping and laughing. No instructions needed, no toys bought – just good, simple fun.

This kind of play might look small, but it’s incredibly powerful. Activities like scooping, pouring and stacking help with:

  • Fine motor skills – the hand strength and control that children need for writing later on.
  • Coordination – learning how their body moves and how to use both hands together.
  • Imagination – turning a pile of conkers into endless games.

And of course, being outdoors collecting them gave her chance to run, bend, stretch and explore.

Why autumn play matters

Autumn is a wonderful time to be outdoors. It’s still (usually!) mild enough for coats and wellies rather than thick winter gear, and there’s so much natural material to collect, throw, pile up and roll around in. And while trips to organised activities or big days out are brilliant, children don’t need them every day. Nature really is the best playground.

Easy autumn movement ideas to try:

  • Collect leaves and throw them in the air – watch them float down together.
  • Roll down a grassy hill (good for balance, confidence, and fun!).
  • Jump in puddles after the rain.
  • Make a “nature trail” challenge – how many pinecones, acorns or conkers can your child find?
  • Build a leaf pile and jump into it.

A final thought

As parents, it’s easy to feel like we need to plan “big” activities to keep children entertained. But the little moments – a handful of conkers, a pile of leaves, a quick game of chase in the park – are often the ones children remember.

So grab your wellies, head outside, and let autumn do its magic. 🍂
