Building Connections Through Sport: Why Relationships Matter More Than Results

There’s a little girl in one of my classes who went on a caravan holiday recently. She joined a sports class while she was away, but came home slightly disappointed — because “Miss Kate” wasn’t there.

Her dad told me the story with a laugh, but to me it said something important: the real magic of children’s sport isn’t in the games or the drills — it’s in the relationships we build.

This week, as we head into half term, I’ve been reflecting on that a lot. From being given a hand-drawn card that absolutely melted my heart, to seeing that same little girl return to class brimming with confidence — it’s these small, human moments that show why inclusive, child-centred sport truly matters.

Listening and Adapting

I’ve started working with a new class in a SEND school, we’re still getting to know one another. Those first sessions were challenging — a new space, too much stimulation, a new coach to figure out. But week by week, we’ve grown together. Last session, I introduced some visual tools that gave the children more autonomy and engagement, and the difference was amazing. Keep an eye on my Instagram where I’ll be sharing details of what I used.

Teaching in a special-needs setting is humbling and energising in equal measure. It’s not about getting everything right; it’s about listening, adapting, and finding joy in small steps forward.

Keeping Families Moving
