Finding Our Way: What Orienteering Taught Us About Sport and Fun

Last weekend, I took the girls on a little adventure—an orienteering event in Stone. If you’ve never tried orienteering before, it’s like a giant outdoor treasure hunt, but instead of clues, you navigate using a map to find different checkpoints. It’s a brilliant way to combine exercise, problem-solving, and the great outdoors.

We were meant to do the easy route, but when we arrived, they’d run out of maps for that course. So, without much of a choice, we braved the medium route instead. At first, the challenge felt exciting, but as we covered more ground, little legs (my daughters’, not mine!) started getting tired. In the end, we didn’t quite make it to the finish and had to cut our route short—so officially, we earned a DNF (Did Not Finish).

But do you know what? It didn’t matter at all.

The Joy is in the Journey

My eldest had an absolute blast, fully embracing the spirit of the adventure. Her favorite part? Dibbing the controls—scanning the checkpoints along the way. She took her role so seriously that she even created a dibbing and dabbing song to go with it! Because, of course, a 4-year-old needs a song for everything. 🎶

For me, this was the perfect reminder of what sport should be about. It’s not always about finishing first or getting things “right.” It’s about movement, exploration, and enjoying the process. My daughters didn’t care that we didn’t finish the course. They were having fun, learning new skills, and feeling proud of themselves for what they did accomplish. And really, isn’t that what matters most?

How This Ties into Roarsome Sport

At Roarsome Sport, this is exactly the mindset we encourage in every session. Sport isn’t just about competition or results—it’s about developing confidence, trying new things, and learning through play. Just like orienteering, our sessions are all about movement, problem-solving, and most importantly, having fun while doing it!

Whether your child is mastering balance, building coordination, or simply enjoying running around with friends, every step counts. It doesn’t matter if they’re the fastest, the strongest, or the most skilled—it matters that they’re there, giving it a go, and growing in confidence each week.

If you’d love to see your child thrive in a fun, supportive sports environment, come and join us! Our Roarsome Sport sessions run all year round, and we’d love to welcome you.

Ready for Your Own Adventure?

If orienteering sounds like something your family would enjoy, I highly recommend giving it a go! You don’t need to be super fit or experienced—just grab a map and head out.
