Why Variety in Sport is Key for Kids’ Development

Spring is finally here, and what a difference the sunshine makes! I’ve been making the most of the brighter days, spending plenty of time outdoors with my girls. I also managed to get back into climbing after a three-year break, which got me thinking about how important variety is—not just in life, but in sport too!

The Power of Variety in Exercise

Before having children, I was a dedicated CrossFit enthusiast, training five days a week for three years. I loved how every workout was different, keeping things fresh while still allowing me to see progress over time. These days, my workouts take place in a home gym (a fancy name for our garden shed!), but I still make an effort to mix things up with orienteering, bike riding, and even the occasional unicycle hockey session.

The key takeaway? Variety keeps things interesting, helps build a wider range of skills, and gives us the freedom to discover what we truly enjoy.

Why Kids Need a Mix of Sports

This same idea is what drives Roarsome Sport. I’ve carefully selected six core sports—football, basketball, cricket, tennis, athletics, and hockey—because each one offers unique skills that help children develop physically and mentally.

For example:
Basketball improves hand-eye coordination and teamwork
Cricket teaches patience, strategy, and balance
Football helps with agility, speed, and control
Tennis sharpens reaction times and motor skills
Athletics builds endurance and confidence
Hockey encourages quick decision-making and coordination

By giving children the opportunity to explore different sports in a fun and supportive environment, they get a well-rounded foundation in movement, balance, and coordination. And, just as importantly, they get to discover what they truly enjoy—whether that’s fast-paced team sports, racket games, or individual competition.
