Winter Feels Long, But Kids Still Need to Stay Active!
Does anyone else feel like this winter has lasted forever? ❄️
As a mum who loves the outdoors, I always try to get my kids outside, but the cold weather, grey skies, and drizzle make it tough. I know many parents feel the same – we all want to encourage our children to stay active, but when it’s freezing outside, curling up under a blanket with a screen seems like the easier option.
But even in winter, kids still need to move! Keeping them active helps with:
✅ Physical health – improves coordination, strength, and fitness
✅ Mental well-being – reduces stress and supports emotional regulation
✅ Better sleep & focus – more movement means better rest and concentration
So how can we get kids moving this half-term without braving the freezing cold for hours? Here’s what we’ve been up to…
Forest School Adventures – A Fun Outdoor Escape
We’ve been heading to Forest School at Sudbury School, which has been a great reason to get outside when we might have stayed indoors.
Last week, my girls were complaining about the cold, but this week, they were totally fine – it was me feeling the freeze! 🥶 Meanwhile, my youngest had the best time in the mud kitchen, pouring freezing cold water like it was the middle of summer. Just watching made me wince!
📌 Why try a forest school?
- Helps kids develop confidence and independence
- Encourages creativity through nature play
- Keeps them moving with climbing, running & exploring
If you’re looking for something fun to do to get you outside, I highly recommend checking out a local Forest School near you!
Half-Term Fun at the National Memorial Arboretum
For a family-friendly day out, we’re planning a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum, where they have:
🌿 The Stick Man Trail – a great way to get kids walking and exploring
🎨 Craft activities – creative fun for little hands
📖 Storytelling sessions – keeping them engaged and learning
It’s a perfect mix of fresh air, activity, and fun, plus it’s a great way to break up the week.
